With annoying frequency I get a message stating that Internet Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. Any suggestions?

go to the add/remove programs, scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer...
and click to remove. In the menu that comes up, choose repair.

That is windows 98, I assume there is something similar for XP...
